New Year Beginnings

A new year is quickly approaching.  Most of us plan to make new beginnings or the appropriate term would be make new resolutions for the year ahead.  I’ve been thinking about beginnings lately.  I’ve been going reverse and forward in my head trying to reflect on my past and squint ahead at the future.  Each year we look at the beginning of January as a clean slate.  We make promises to change certain habits, get healthier, get closer to God, rebuild relationships, or redevelop our paths in our lives. I’ve promised myself that I need to get healthy again because I feel like I’m not moving enough and I know I’m eating whatever I want.  But even as I type this, I’m thinking about the Reese Cup that is staring at me across the table.  Our clean slates quickly get filled with erase marks and moved beginning dates.

Back to the beginning though, it’s a place to start.  It’s the point to learn something new.  At the end of every year, I reflect on what I’ve experienced, seen, lost, and learned.  So with every New Year, I think I should look at it as a time to begin to learn more about my journey.  I should embrace the beginning of each day with alert eyes, ears, hands, and heart to tackle whatever God has for me that day.  I pray that I will be aware of what I’m supposed to do and not miss an opportunity that God has scheduled me for.  I pray that I won’t ignore the whispers of the Holy Spirit just because I’m selfish, proud or afraid.

When I think of the first beginning, my mind goes to creation.  Genesis is the origin, the coming into being, or the beginning.  In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth. He made light and dark separate to distinguish night from day. He made vegetation to grow and bear seed. He made the creatures that roam the Earth, swim in the seas, and soar in the sky.  He finished His creation with humanity.  He made us in His likeness and wanted blessings for us.  He said these beginnings were good and He rested.  Then He placed man in the garden to tend it but requested that he not eat from the Tree of Knowledge.  He then made woman for man, because He knew that man needed a companion.

Then if you’ve ever read Genesis, you know that we screw up.  We listen to the Devil and eat what God’s told us not too.  We think we know better than He does.  We think that we have to know everything.  We think we need to control our own lives.  We do as we want and then feel the shame afterwards.  But God is so good that He made a way to erase the slate of sins in our lives.  He loves His creation and if we would just stay in His newness every day we will reap the benefits of His goodness.  Yes, we will slip up and mess up, but find peace in the grace of God knowing that Jesus paid for those slip ups and mess ups and that he offers a renewing beginning each day.  The sun rises and a new day appears, let’s live it the way that He intends for us to.  Let’s tend to what He has given us for each day and we will see His blessings.  If we continue that thought pattern for each day then the days will turn into weeks that will turn into a year filled with God’s goodness.

Perfect Timepiece

God, you know the beginning and the end.
You designed the blueprint, you sketched the outline.
You placed within each of us a unique model in appearance and our innermost soul.

God knows our timeline.
He lets us decide how to spend it.
Quieten my soul to trust that Your hands control the clock, not I.
Let me hear every second
and react within the minute.

We don’t see God’s planner
Or the events that are to come.
But, they are on His calendar.
Do we choose to show up when He calls?

Will I just watch the sand disappear in the hourglass?
Will I be in the shadow of the sundial?
Position me in the right coordinates of Your GPS,
So that I meet who I’m supposed to and do what You want me to do.
I want to balance on Your pendulum.
Be on Your watch
In your perfect time.

Time Keeps On Ticking

“There is a special time for everything. There is a time for everything that happens under heaven. There is a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pick what is planted. There is a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up. There is a time to cry, and a time to laugh; a time to have sorrow, and a time to dance. There is a time to throw stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to kiss, and a time to turn from kissing. There is a time to try to find, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away. There is a time to tear apart, and a time to sew together; a time to be quiet, and a time to speak. There is a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.” Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
It is time for a new year to begin. This year may have been a hard year for you or it may have been a beautiful one with many memories. So, as most of you, I am reflecting on the year that is ending and wondering what the new one holds. This month, my husband and I were surprised by news that his sister was having twins. So, we were blessed with twin nieces. I’ve also had several close friends have babies this year. In April, my grandmother passed away. She was one of the biggest influences in my life. I love and miss her greatly, especially at family gatherings and holidays. I miss her smiles and giggles. I miss her hugs and her advice. I miss her gentle spirit and big heart.
The first half of the year I thought our business wouldn’t make it to the end of the year, but it did and there is renewed hope that it will survive a little longer. Our church has grown; I’ve seen new faces come into the youth group. I’ve had teens graduate out and teens graduate into the group. Our format changed in the fall, we meet on Friday nights and it has grown our group some. I’m learning alongside the teens, God has new things for us to learn each day. Sometimes it’s a repeat lesson, but it’s always a needed one. My son transitioned from elementary school to middle school. He’s growing up quicker than I want him to.
Every year we make resolutions or promises of change. How often do we keep the resolution? Why do we usually not? Do we just slip back into the routineness of life? Do we have things happen to us that knock us off of our hopes of change? Regardless, of whether you keep the resolutions or not, life still happens. If you wake up, there is a day for you to live. Every day consists of time to be spent. There is time each day that is allotted for a specific purpose, time you have to use for only that purpose, such as work. But, each day also consists of free time. How do you spend your free time? I’ve wasted a lot of time. I’ve also made memories with others with my free time. God gives us all time on this earth to use, to learn from, to spend, to do, and to be. What does 2013 consist of? We shall see.
